Monokraum
Charis Tsang is a London-based architect and printmaker who was born and bred in Hong Kong then Canada. Originally a keen model maker in paper and clay, Charis' interests moved towards photo etching before discovering her passion for carving into linoleum in 2013. In need of a creative outlet outside of work, she launched Monokraum on Etsy in 2014, dedicated to the meticulous hand-carved and hand-printed art of linocuts. As a personal antidote to a world dominated by the computer-generated, one of Charis’ main aims with linocutting is to translate her own digital photographs into an analogue, hand-crafted medium.
Traditional linoprints typically have a rough, handmade quality to them. However, Charis' work reflects her architectural background and love for clean cut, precise lines that contrasts with the very hand-made process used to create them.

+ Comes in a pack of 6.
+ Each piece is printed by hand without the aid of a press onto Japanese calligraphy paper.
+ The cards are riso-printed by Earthbound Press. This method of printing was specifically chosen as it emulates the hand-printed quality of the original linoprint source material, therefore subtle variations are to be expected between each card (even if they are of the same design).
+ Each card is A6 (105 x 148 mm) in size, printed on 300gsm white paper, with a brief description of the building and print on the back. The inside is left blank for your own message and comes with a kraft brown envelope.

The Electric Cinema, one of the oldest working cinemas in the UK, opened on 24 February 1910. It was designed by the architect Gerald Seymour Valentin in the Edwardian Baroque style, identifiable by the theatre's rusticated ground level adorned with floral garlands, iconic pilasters and arched openings.
During the day, the building is quite often hidden behind the hive of market stalls that line Portobello Market, however its distinctive arched gable end and neon logo peeks out above the stall canopies. These images are based on Charis’ own photographic work and carved into sheets of linoleum.

Admired by architects and brutalist-lovers for its distinctive diamond shaped concrete facade, the building was denied listed status by Historic England and as a result, it was demolished in 2019 and will soon be replaced by a 10-storey luxury hotel. These images are based on Charis’ own photographic work and carved into sheets of linoleum.
