Union is an innovative incense holder designed to accommodate various sizes of incense sticks, offering enhanced ease of cleaning and long-term maintenance.
Design Inspiration
Inspired by the architectural elegance of Tadao Ando, Union is more than just an incense holder—it’s a sculptural piece that interacts with its surroundings. The clean lines and geometric forms not only serve a functional purpose but also create dynamic shadows throughout the day, adding a contemplative aesthetic to any environment. This versatile design reimagines traditional two-dimensional concepts into a three-dimensional form, making Union a perfect blend of utility and art.
Inspired by Enzo Mari’s philosophy—“I suggest looking outside the window: if you like what you see, there’s no reason for new projects. If, on the other hand, there are things that fill you with horror … then there are good reasons for your project.’
Design Approach
Rather than the traditional approach of creating a hole to hold the incense stick, Union uses a clamping mechanism made from a Jesmonite plate and 3D-printed aluminium. This design allows for incense sticks of different sizes to be held vertically while capturing the majority of falling ash on the plate. This minimizes the need for frequent cleaning, keeping your space tidy with less effort. Additionally, the ash can be collected in a tray below, transforming the act of cleaning into a meaningful collection of meditation sessions, encouraging the user to let go of mental burdens.
Material Selection
Union is crafted from Jesmonite and 3D-printed aluminium, carefully chosen for their sustainability and functionality. Jesmonite, a water-based resin produced in the UK, has a lower carbon footprint and is more sustainable during manufacturing. 3D-printed aluminium was selected due to the efficiency of digital fabrication, which reduces waste. Both materials are weather-resistant and fire-resistant, making them ideal for use in an incense holder and a lasting addition to your space.
— Care: clean with warm water to get ride of the incense oil stain and use a soft brush to collect ashes into the bottom tray
— Size (L x W x H): 13 x 14 x 5 cm
— Materials: Jesmonite, Aluminium
